August 2024 Newsletter
CLF Turns 15!
CLF turned 15 years old on July 30, 2024. Founded in 2009 to support a single installation, Fort Campbell. CLF has continued to grow, and we now have partnerships with 19 Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps sites in 10 different states! Our reach stretches from Fort Campbell, Kentucky in the east to Homestead Air Reserve Base, Florida in the south to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona in the west and to our northernmost partnership with the US Army Garrison Alaska in Fairbanks.
We have partnerships with 8 bases and installations in Texas alone and have partnerships with all three major active bases and installations in Alaska. We are currently in the process of preparing a report which will highlight our partnerships and initiatives over the last 15 years. This will be available for distribution by the end of the calendar year.
As we continue to grow, the Board of Trustees approved our updated mission statement: Partner with the US Military and public or private landowners to protect lands compatible with both sustainable ecosystems and the military mission.
Columbus Air Force Base – New Partnership
CLF welcomes our newest partner, Columbus Air Force Base! Located north of Columbus, Mississippi, the Columbus AFB is home to the 14th Flying Training Wing. The wing’s mission focuses on specialized undergraduate pilot training in the T-6 Texan II, T-38C Talon and T-1A Jayhawk aircraft. In addition to the flying training mission, Columbus AFB has the capability to deploy personnel at a moment’s notice to support worldwide taskings and contingencies.
CLF is partnering with Columbus AFB to acquire land through restrictive use easements to reduce incompatible development, including new mine development, near the base. These protected buffer areas will also provide ecosystem services such as water purification, carbon sequestration, and wildlife habitat for the northern Long-Eared Bat, the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker, and other threatened and endangered species.
CLF marks our second landowner partnership at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas!
Left to right Dan Chapin, CLF Director of Military Partnerships; Mr. Seidenberger, Landowner Partner; Larry Dotson, CLF Randolph AFB Program Manager
Randolph Air Force Base (RAFB) is the US military’s premier base for pilot instructor training and combat systems officer training, and home to the Air Education and Training Command (AETC) and the 12th Flying Training Wing. At RAFB, pilots train on the T-6A Texan II, the T-38C Talon, and the T-1A Jayhawk. In May 2024 CLF entered into our second landowner partnership this year near Seguin Auxiliary Field. The conservation easement will protect approximately 78 acres of agricultural land by helping reduce incompatible development in this rapidly growing area – protecting RAFB’s ability to continue to train pilots, while preserving important working lands in Texas!
CLF completes our first project for US Army Garrison – Alaska!
USAG Alaska is a nationally significant training location and logistical center. Alaska’s environment, terrain, and climate provide unique training opportunities, and its location is critical for transportation between North America and Asia. USAG Alaska consists of Fort Wainwright, Fort Greely, and their associated training areas. In June 2024 CLF completed our first project for USAG-Alaska.
Located near Fort Greely, this project will protect approximately 32 acres of land from future incompatible development or use. The tract is within an area surrounded by military land, so prevention of development is particularly important.
CLF helps preserve another 46 acres of land near Fort Cavazos, Texas.

In June 2024 CLF entered a second partnership with landowning family to protect through a perpetual easement another 45+ acres of agricultural land near Fort Cavazos, Texas. This will limit incompatible development of the land, helping ensure that current and future military training, testing, and operations at Fort Cavazos can continue.
Alaska Defense Forum Attendance
Dan Chapin (Director of Military Partnerships); Darren Lilley, Tim Melnick, and Mary Nixon (Alaska Program Managers); and Leonard Jordan (CLF Board Member) will be attending the Alaska Defense Forum which begins on August 26 in Fairbanks.
The forum provides an opportunity for CLF to engage with base and installation partners from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, US Army Garrison – Alaska, and Eielson Air Force Base. It will also provide the opportunity to meet with landowners to discuss the REPI program and garner interest in placing their lands into conservation easements. If you are attending the forum please look for Dan, Darren, Tim, Mary, and Leonard.
CLF-City of San Antonio Partnership
Founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718, the city in 1731 became the first chartered civil settlement in what is now present-day Texas. San Antonio’s roots were largely military, and the city continues to have a large military presence today.
Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) history began with a 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommendation that resulted in congressional legislation directing the consolidation of installations in the San Antonio area. CLF is supporting Randolph AFB, Lackland AFB, and Camp Bullis at JBSA. To assist in our protection efforts CLF is proud to partner with the City of San Antonio. In addition to protecting the military mission, several other benefits will be achieved through this partnership. Working together we are poised to help protect the quality and quantity of the water recharging into the Edwards Aquifer through the protection of land over the sensitive Recharge and Contributing Zones of the aquifer. In some cases, conservation easements may allow public access for recreational activities, an added benefit for the residents of San Antonio. This is truly a win-win partnership.
